Sarnath in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh

Sarnath is city located 13 km north-east of Varanasi near the confluence of the Ganges and the Varuna Rivers in Uttar Pradesh, India. Sarnath is one of the revered Buddhist pilgrimage sites. The deer park in Sarnath is where Gautama Buddha first taught the Dharma, and where the Buddhist Sangha came into existence through the enlightenment of Kondanna.

Sarnath is pilgrimage site for various tourists from India and from outside world. The site is home to Buddhist architecture of various cultures, as Buddhism is major religion in Thailand, Japan, Tibet, Sri Lanka and Myanmar and they construct temples and structures in their respective cultural style. Some of the famous attractions of Sarnath are mentioned below :-

Dhamek Stupa - it is 128 feet high and 93 feet in diameter, most remarkable structure built with partly stone and partly bricks.

Dharmarajika Stupa - it is one of the few pre-Ashokan Stupas remaining.

Chaukhandi Stupa - it reminds the place where the Buddha met his first disciples.

Mulagandhakuti Vihara - this placa commemorates the place where Buddha spent his first rainy season.

Ashoka Pillar - the Ashoka Pillar erected here, originally surmounted by the "Lion Capital of Asoka".

Sarnath Museum - the museum houses famous Ashokan lion capital, rich collection of sculptures comprising numerous Buddha and Bodhisattva images.
